A New Day 01:37
I see a new day dawning, are you coming along? Can you handle the freedom? Will you sing the new song? I see the old world dying; we're gonna set ourselves free I see the future bright ahead With equal rights for you and me Equal rights for you and me We're gonna make it happen We'll open every door And let the sunshine in Where it's never shone before Woman power will do it, oh, we'll celebrate equality There is a new day dawning Come along with me and see Come along with me and see Arm in arm together, there ain't nothing we can't do Our belief in justice - hey, it's gonna see us through I said woman power can do it; aw, we're gonna celebrate equality There is a new day dawning Come along with me and see Come along with me......and see!

What do I do with my anger; what do I do with my pain? Where do I put it now that it's out? Can I hide it away again? Can my eyes deny they've seen what they've seen? Can my ears pretend they've not heard?; Can I go right on being the person I was? Can I say not a word? I used to think women were cherished I learned that as gospel and creed But a pedestal, just like a prison, my friend Is a very small space indeed You pay such a price for the learning Life never can be the same As girlhood dreams are falling apart, you try to find someone to blame Now who in the hell are you gonna blame? Sometimes I wish things were different That somehow I just couldn't see All of the truths that are filling my head I wish they would just let me be Ah, but truth is a terrible mistress And she moves in, she moves in to stay So the answer, I guess, take the truth you possess And use it 'til your dying day Oh, you gotta live it 'til your dying day.

Women started marching in 1848 Women started marching, 'way back in 1848 Oh, we're marching yet today 'cause the need is still so great They finally freed the black man in 1865 Don't you know, they finally, finally freed the black man in 18 and 65 Hey, we're waiting for our turn and our hopes remain alive Hey now, they said that we could vote in 19 and two oh But the fight's not over yet; we got a long way still to go Well, they said that we could vote in 19 and two oh Oh, well, the fight's not over yet; we got a long way still to go Alice brought it into Congress in 1923 Alice brought it into Congress in 1923 Well, we still ain't got that ERA. Now it's up to you and me Alice died without it; now its up to me and you Alice Paul died without it; well now it's up to me and you Oh, it had a new beginning This time we're gonna push it through I said that women still are marching, in lines as far as you can see The struggle will continue 'til we gain equality Women still are marching in lines as far as you can see And the struggle will continue until we gain real, I mean real equality.

So they think they heard us speak out at the polls in '82 Well, we just might have a few more things to say There is a message we are sending about a dream just coming true That the patriarchy's finally seen it's day . It's a man's world, unless women vote It's a man's world, sure as sin It's a man's world, unless women vote Now the old boys' club is through; we're coming in Yes, I know that we've been voting now for 60 years and more But without a single voice, we've not been heard We've been voting like they told us to; we'll think for you, they swore Why, your rights are safe with us, dear (That's absurd) It's a man's world unless women vote For a world that's free and just It's a man's world unless women vote Now from here on in, they'll have to deal with us We've a gift for Ronald Reagan One that's truly from the heart Knowing just how much he loves to get away We have votes to send him packing We have votes to help him start On a permanent Santa Barbara holiday It's a man's world unless women vote It's time women had their say It's a man's world unless women vote Oh, the gender gap just proves we're on our way No more man's world!.

We're gonna leave this world behind, the one where we're not free We're gonna build a new one; we've a plan A world where children can grow into all that they can be A partnership of woman and man The road is long, the going rough, but we will see it through Our goal is worth the anger and the tears If we just stand together, there's nothing we can't do Our purpose will sustain us through the years In sisterhood we will prevail; the answer's in the wind Together we're a force so pure and strong Hear our voices; we speak for choices To set all people free Our cause is justice, equality our song The road is long, the going rough, but we will see it through Our goal is worth the anger and the tears If we just stand together, there's nothing we can't do Our purpose will sustain us through the years In sisterhood we will prevail; the answer's in the wind Together we're a force so pure and strong Hear our voices; we speak for choices To set all people free Our cause is justice, equality our song Our cause is justice, equality our song.

I'm a feminist mom, gee, I'm glad to be a feminist mom Proud to be leading a new generatlon That cut its teeth on women's liberation Feminist kids; we've got a lot of good feminist kids They're gonna finish the work that we started Leave those good ol' boys brokenhearted We're gonna turn the world around Just you wait and see We are the ticket; ooh, we're gonna stick it To the foes of equality So for our daughters and sons we must be the ones We gotta work hard so we can lead 'em Into a world of brand new freedom Where feminist might will make feminist right If we have to beg, steal or borrow We're gonna save 'em some sorrow We have a stake in tomorrow, feminist moms Oh yeah, feminist moms.

It's been five thousand years since women been down And the day has finally come - we're gonna turn things around Let me tell you, friend, our patience is at an end Look out, you better look out; women on the rise We've been doing as we've been told for far too long Lanquishing in our place; now don't you know that's wrong We've been taught to smile and how to please But from now on we'll stay off our knees Look out, you better look out; women on the rise You know we're gonna have that ERA It's a matter of time and will Our bodies will belong to us some day We're gonna defeat every anti-bill That pink collar ghetto will be no more We'll be paid what we are worth; we'll open every door You've had your turn, boys, I declare From this day forward be prepared to share Look out. you better look out; women on the rise We're gonna see the system change, I swear We're gonna raise our children free And women will get their rightful share of Social Security Now insurance rates and pensions ain't been fair Plus we're tired of being out there working without good child care And those homophobic and racist folks Are gonna have to give up their jokes Look out, you better look out, women on the rise The gender gap is gonna operate Reagan and friends, we're seal your fate Look out, you better look out; look out, you better look out Look out, you better look out, women on the rise

Dreams 02:07
A little boy is taught to dream big, to reach for the highest star To use his imagination ........to fly far While a little girl is taught to dream small, to find a little nest to fill With corners to sweep, shelves to keep Go flying, oh, she never will But if you'll just let her try a little girl can be a butterfly There's just one catch, wouldn't you know That cocoon has to go So let that little girl dream big; point her toward all that she can be With your love and her imagination, you will see.....a girl flying free Now if you'll just let her try a little girl can be a butterfly There's just one catch, wouldn't you know That cocoon has to go So help that little girl dream big; point her toward all that she can be With your love and her imagination you will see......a woman fly free I guarantee - a woman fly free.

Oh, we come from the San Joaquin Valley We live amid a conservative throng But our feminist bond will sustain us We are scattered but one thousand strong If you come to the San Joaquin Valley, Now you may not find a whole lot to do You can stand around and watch the raisins wrinkle Or we just might stage a rally or two Yes, we've a network building in our Valley So you feminists come one and all Patriarchy's lost its charm; let's bring CR to the farm And cheer while those sexists bastards fall Oh, we come from the San Joaquin Valley We live amid a conservative throng But our feminist bond will sustain us As we grow to many thousands strong.

Why did it take so long? Why did it hurt so bad? To learn why a woman's life is laced with pain Why did it take so long? Why did it hurt so bad? To learn why a woman's life is laced with pain First they tell you, hey, little girl, you've got to find you a man One who'll give you his name and turn your life into something fine Now I'm telling them there ain't no man who can make my life fine The power is in my hands; my life is mine Then they tell you have babies, maybe one or two Make a real woman out of you If you follow the commandment, your days will shine So I had my babies like I was told They couldn't change my life to gold The power is in my hands; my life is mine Now I've got a man that I love so And we love to watch our children grow But you can't learn who you are Hitched to somebody else's star I gotta be who I gotta be - loving, strong and free The power is in my hands; my life is mine The power is in my hands; my life is mine The power is in my hands; my life is mine My life is mine; my life is mine Why did it take so long? Why did it hurt so bad?.

Doesn't it make you angry, spending your time and energy Fighting for what you know should be yours, automatically yours? It's a hell of a revelation the day when a woman finally sees That this greatest of all democracies was Not designed with her in mind But we can change all that; we're gonna set women free Yes, we can change all that with just a little time Oh, we can change all that; come along with me Up where the air is rarified; the view is well worth the climb Now what the founding fathers were all about Conveniently left the founding mothers out A nation where half aren't free Isn't good enough for you and me We're supposed to be grateful for second best Asking nothing more than a well-filled nest And where are the men who care That women get their fair share? Well, we can change all that; we're gonna set women free Yes, we can change all that - I mean the status quo Oh, we can change all that; come along with me Where women can be anything Hey, you wanna watch us grow? I have a dream I know you share And if the goddess will listen to our prayer She's gonna help us turn this world around Women are buds just about to bloom Move over, fellas, give us elbow room Every flower needs its place in the sun There is space enough for everyone No more races that only men can run We're gonna change all that!

Womanhood 01:19
The fact in our lives is our womanhood Not our class, not our color, not whom we choose to love The fact in our lives is our womanhood Its the same song we all sing As we walk hand in hand, proud in womanhood I know we can, I know we gotta change the world The fact in our lives is simply womanhood . We will not be turned aside or told we dare not start For more than half the world, is part of womanhood As I've come to feel the pride, there's a stirring in my heart I'm so glad to be a part of womanhood Womanhood, oh, yes, womanhood, ......womanhood.

about

This most recent of the No Strings recordings is a compilation of twelve songs written and performed by Harriette Wagner (Ramos at the 1984 time of recording), produced by John Koontz with Harriette's son, Darren Embry, on guitar, bass and arrangements. Her other son, Matthew Embry, is responsible for getting this production in motion, working in the studio behind the scenes.

The ERA was introduced in Congress in 1923. Thirteen states have yet to ratify it, with only one needed to finally allow its addition to the Constitution. It seems a good time to resurrect this material which made its' way around conferences, rallies, conventions and media events with Harriette in the '80s. Some of the songs are topical, referring to then- President Reagan and to our most vocal opponent, Phyllis Schlafly, using phraseology of the day. Most, however, is timeless, speaking to the fundamental nature of the ubiquitous discrimination against women's full participation in society. Feminism, subtle and nuanced, is misunderstood by many; it is hoped that a reintroduction of the subject will eliminate much of the confusion.

We hope you enjoy this effort and do whatever you can to bring about gender equality, meaning full recognition and implementation of the appropriate female role in society. If you live in one of the un-ratified states, encourage your Representative and both of your Senators to move forward on this issue. Yes, we make babies (with, don't forget, the cooperation of men) but "It Isn't All That We Do."
